A Chinese startup has developed a miniature nuclear battery capable of powering a smartphone for 50 years without requiring recharging.
Termed as the world’s “first miniaturised atomic energy system,” the nuclear battery works with 63 nuclear isotopes compactly arranged within a casing smaller than a coin.
Betavolt scientists used nickel-63 as an energy source and diamond semiconductors to convert decay energy into electrical current using a thin crystal semiconductor. This ‘atomic energy battery’ can then power the iPhone in your pocket for half a century.
Despite sounding like over-engineered birth control, the makers insist the unique design of the battery ensures safety. Betavolt claims that the ‘layered structure’ prevents the battery from catching fire or exploding when subjected to sudden force – unlike conventional batteries. Additionally, the battery can operate in a wide temperature range, from -60 to 120 degrees Celsius.
Betavolt also claims the battery emits no radiation and is suitable for medical devices like pacemakers and hearing aids. After decay, it transforms into a stable, non-radioactive copper isotope.
Envisioning a future where ‘mobile phones never need to be charged and drones can fly forever’, the company hopes to produce a battery with 1 watt of power by 2025. The small size of these batteries also allows for multiple units to be connected, increasing the power output.
Betavolt says it aims to develop atomic energy batteries for a variety of applications, including aerospace, AI, medical devices, and micro-robots. If it works, China will become a heavy hitter in the emerging AI technology arena.
This technology has the potential to transform electronic gadgets by eliminating the need for charges and portable power banks. Unlike Li-ion batteries, devices powered by these nuclear batteries could function non-stop without a decrease in capacity or longevity.
No more phone chargers seems like a sweet offer, but until someone puts 50 of the tiny nuclear batteries in a microwave and cooks it on high for an hour, I’m not putting it in my pants.
