The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town’s longest-running street party/parade, and is led by the Kaapse Klopse (Cape minstrels) every year on the second of January.
Historically, this was the one day Cape slaves were given off each year. Called Tweede Nuwe Jaar (“second new year”), it is a colourful celebration of our history and sees minstrels, dancers, performers and marching bands performing on the streets of Cape Town.
About 70 minstrel troupes celebrated yesterday, with scores of people coming out to watch the parade.
