Seven people have been injured in a stampede that occurred at Tongji Univeristy in Shanghai. The cause of the insane rush of people was none other than David Beckham. According to eye witness accounts, some 1,000 people rushed towards Beckham when he arrived.
Beckham’s visit to the university as an ambassador to the Chinese Super League was to meet the players on the university team. When the star arrived, the crowds rushed towards him causing students, police and univeristy security guards to be injured. A Tongji University player said:
We didn’t expect so many people showing up here. Too many fans of Beckham.
Due to the stampede, the event was cancelled and Shanghai police initiated an investigation into the incident. Beckham relayed a message wishing all those injured a quick recovery and apologised for the event having to be cancelled. The meet at Tongji University was part of a seven day promotional tour in China.
