The price of bread, potatoes and onions – staples in most people’s diet – could be pushed up because of the effects of the drought that arrived on SA shores this year. Slated as the worst drought in South Africa’s modern-day history, the effects will not only be felt by the farmers themselves, but by temporary labourers and, of course, consumers. Although Cape Town is still receiving rain, the El Nino has had hazardous effects on the rest of the country.
