German research facility BrainDriver has put together a kit that lets people make rudimentary driving commands with their brains – you know, without using their hands. I have serious concerns about how this system deals with those brief suicidal thoughts that tend to pop up when knee-deep in traffic on the 9/5 commute.
BrainDriver mean this to be more of a proof-of-concept than anything else – to let potential investors know it can be done, or to impress their parents or something. Also, it only works on the Volkswagen Passat, in case cruising at 2o km/ph with an with an electroencephalography helmet wasn’t ridiculous enough on its own.
Still, I mean the system works; it’s unsettling and clunky, but people can do the whole look-ma-no-hands thing for real now. BrainDriver will be testing the system in Berlin traffic a little later this year.
