According to experts at a fertility meeting in Sweden, poor oral health can actually delay conception by two months, hence the comparison to obesity, which apparently does the same.
(If you were wondering whether an obese person with bad teeth takes four months longer to conceive, then you’re a bad person.)
This next fact makes you wish you’d listened to your dentist:
Gum disease has even been linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, miscarriage and poor sperm count in men.
Professor Roger Hart, of the University of Western Australia, had this to say: “Until now, there have been no published studies that investigate whether gum disease can affect a woman’s chance of conceiving, so this is the first report to suggest that gum disease might be one of several factors that could be modified to improve the chances of a pregnancy.”
This just makes me wonder if the university accepts funding from the Australian Dental Association.
