It sounds like one of those Indiana Jones movies, don’t you think? Indiana Jones and The Golden Age Of Luxury Train Travel! We weren’t too far off, to be honest – as The Muse and I (accompanied by the Hardimans!) journeyed across South Africa, from Pretoria to Cape Town, stopping off at Kimberley and Matjiesfontein […]
Anyone traveling from Cape Town to Johannesburg, especially on the “business run” on a Monday morning, knows that it’s a heck of a busy route. Exactly how busy, though? The Economist crunched the numbers and it turns out its one of the world’s busiest, outranking anything in the USA.
That’s right, I am officially considering it. I spent some time with Virgin Galactic‘s Commerical Director, Stephen Attenborough (no relation, but an appropriate coincidence, nonetheless) the other day, as we shot the breeze at the Mount Nelson hotel. ETV News captured our conversation, so keep an eye out for the Tech Report on Thursday nights (channel […]
It is no secret that I am deathly afraid of flying. It takes me a fistful of meds just to get off the ground, and even then I’m in a mild panic until I’m back on terra firma. Which is why articles like this worry me, because I want my plane in the best condition possible.
If you’ve wondered what it would be like to travel inside the brain of a Japanese schoolgirl, then now is your chance. Taiwan-based Eva Airlines, and Sanrio, the company that owns the Hello Kitty brand, collaborated to launch a Hello Kitty-themed aircraft. See all the pink cuteness inside.
This weekend, the City Press reported that Minister Lulu Xingwana, on being told she couldn’t have her flight seat upgraded from economy to business class, she merely enquired, “whether or not this was because she is a k****r?” Xingwana has responded by saying it is all “sensational hot air”, and accused the paper of “one-sided and biased journalism.”

Everyone knows the greatest holidays are the ones where “we bumped into this local guy, who knew about all the secret spots and gave us bits and pieces of information and facts that no-one else knew.” Nobody wants to go to every single tourist hotspot and, if they do, they want to tick the right […]
I hate flying. I can’t explain it, but I have a terrible irrational fear of being in a plane. I just can’t get my head around that much metal not falling out of the sky. And now my fears are made worse – Airbus has found cracks in the wings of the A380 – but says it’s still safe to fly.
This is not a paid-for feature. I just saw an announcement on the Emirates website about this global sale they’ve having, and I thought you would like to know about it – given your propensity for travel and good deals! Looks like a pretty impressive line-up of rates they’ve got here. I even did a test […]
Two adventurers proved that Africa can be tamed – on the back of a 150cc scooter! A photojournalist and web manager have proven that a trip across Southern Africa can be achieved on a Vespa, with grace and ease. Having already tested the Vespa LX 150 on trips in Europe, including Italy to London and […]
I’m not clear on why we would still need travel agents or anything, but if we do, Google Flights, launching today, is up to the task. Initially only available in a couple of US cities, Google Flights is the first result we’ve seen of Google’s acquisition of travel software company ITA back in April.
Rick Mereki and two of his friends traveled the world in 44 days. Their trip included 11 countries, 63 000 km covered, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage featuring Rick walking! They took 1 second clips from all the locations visited, and compiled it into this must see video. It is nothing short of brilliant.
Please save your ‘holla-caust’ comments for the end of the article. Hotel Stadt Hameln, a four-star hotel in northern Germany, has converted an on-site jail into a themed party location, sort of the way the Nazis converted the jail into a forced labour camp during World War II. Some people are angry about this.
Since 9/11, flying has sucked. For all of the wrong reasons, flight security has become paranoid and despotic, and nowhere worse than the USA – where TSA agents have manhandled infants and the infirm in ‘the war on terror.’ So it’s nice to see that the Texas House of Representatives just banned TSA searches without probable cause.
A new Thai airline, P.C. Air (appropriate that), is set to become the first airline in the world to employ openly transsexual flight attendants. Thailand is known for its tolerance of transvestites and transsexuals, known locally as ‘katoeys’ or ‘ladyboys’. But, up till now, the only jobs available to them have been in the beauty and ‘entertainment’ industries.
