A female mayor from Davao City in the Philippines has punched a court sheriff, in front of numerous TV cameras, because the sheriff insisted on demolishing 200 shacks despite her request for a two-hour delay. She’s since been told by her husband to take leave for five days while the Department of Interior and Local Government investigates.
Sara Duterte explained that she got frustrated when Davao Regional Trial Court sheriff, Abe Andres, was unable to grant her a request for a two-hour extension before pushing through with the demolition of informal settlers’ shanty homes in the Agdao district.
Duterte told local media after the incident:
I’ll go on leave for five days to allow everybody to investigate. But they can actually start investigating now… Maybe they want to go to the city hall to investigate, it should take five days.
I’m actually expecting this. It’s good that my husband asked me to go on leave.
Apparently, Duterte also threw a few profanities at the Hall of Justice members involved with the demolition process and apologised about that:
Again sorry to the people who were not involved. I’m sorry for my outburst against them.
Poor Andres certainly didn’t expect to get walloped in the face when Duterte casually beckoned him nearer at about 0:39.
