After a ridiculous amount of time at liberty, George Zimmerman – the guy who shot Trayvon Martin for wearing a hoodie – has been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. Due to some oddment of Florida law, a charge of first-degree murder was ruled out. If convicted, Zimmerman faces life in prison.
To recap – Zimmerman was the captain of the neighborhood watch in the Sanford suburb in Orlando, Florida. He spotted the 17-year-old Martin leaving a convenience store, which he flagged as suspicious, and followed the teen in his car for a couple of blocks. When Martin asked Zimmerman why he was being followed, Zimmerman got out of the car – a scuffle ensued, and then Zimmerman shot the teenager in the chest with his 9mm handgun.
Zimmerman’s new defense attorney (the first one quit) says Zimmerman will not be pleading guilty, because apparently you can follow an unnarmed kid in your car, get out, shoot him, and still call yourself innocent.
