Football pitch invasions don’t usually tend to end well, but this is a horrible end to what should have been a moment of jubilation for one fan.
Kaizer Chiefs wrapped up the PSL title with a 2-0 win over Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. As you can see, the fans were in a festive mood and streamed onto the field, despite pleas from the stadium announcer for them to remain in their seats.
The man, dressed in the Amakhosi colours of black and gold, can be seen running towards the field around the 16-second mark, before a gunshot is heard and he falls to the ground. It appears security are at a loss as to how they should handle the situation, with little to no medical assistance provided in the moments that follow. The Herald reports:
The footage, captured by a young soccer supporter at the game who said he “just wants justice to be done”, came to light after an announcement by the PSL yesterday that the Nedbank Cup final would still be played at the stadium on Saturday.
Here’s hoping that the security measures are stepped up ahead of the big clash and whoever is responsible for the above incident is brought to justice.
