At the best of times I’m not a fan of opening ceremonies, which are in my mind a massive waste of money that could be better spent on frivolities like houses with running water and infrastructure.

That was before I was forced to endure Pitbull opening Brazil’s 2014 World Cup ceremony, which was pretty much the nail in the coffin (HERE).

You think they might have learnt from that shambles, but it looks like this time around the organisers will plumb new depths. Here’s the Sydney Morning Herald:

Bundchen is one of the stars and plays out a scene that mirrors some of the problems being experienced in the buildup to the Olympics.

As she struts down a catwalk to the sound ofThe Girl From Ipanema, she is unexpectedly held up and robbed.

Police officers come to her rescue in a chase around the stadium and they catch the accused.

Yahoo says it may all have been a misunderstanding that has since been sorted:

…in a new twist late Monday, a well connected columnist for Globo newspaper, Lauro Jardim, reported that the controversial scene was being axed.

According to Jardim, directors had meant to have the scene show a street vendor running up to Bundchen to sell her a bikini.

“On paper, it was perfect. At the rehearsal yesterday, however, it didn’t work,” the columnist wrote. “It gave the impression to those watching that it was about an assault. And from this it turned into a polemic on social media.”

I would say they should probably axe that scene from the opening ceremony. Better yet, axe the opening ceremony and use the funds to pay police and firefighters who have not been paid in months (HERE).

We’ll keep a close eye on Gisele then, just to see how this all plays out.
