Everyone loves getting stuff for free, but over the years we’ve learnt to look a gift horse in the mouth.
I don’t think any of us believe a long-lost relative died in Nigeria and left us a princely sum of money, so scam artists have had to become more creative with how they fleece us of our money.
One such scam doing the rounds at the moment – popular on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter – involves a survey ‘being conducted by Woolworths’.

There are several versions of the survey, the latest being a request to complete it, share the link with 10 people, and provide personal details in return for a R6,500 store voucher.
Another version includes a chance to win a voucher, with a R7-a-day subscription hidden in the fine print after you enter your cellphone number.
Woolworths said the survey is a scam and must be ignored, and that it will never request customer details via email or SMS.
“From a social media perspective, we track scam complaints and escalate them immediately to our social customer care team which responds to every social mention we can find with an explanation and the link to the caution on our website,” said Woolworths.
You’re probably getting off lightly if it’s just that R7 a day, because providing personal details to scam artists usually ends in disaster.
Handy first tip – if you want to check the authenticity of an SMS you receive with some or other punt, head over to SMSCodes and follow the steps they mention.
Handy second tip – beef up your personal and business security with NEWORDER, because you can never be too protected.
Essentially, don’t go clicking on links from sources you don’t know – this is 2016, it’s a jungle out there.
