Walmart did badly with their 9/11 advertising HERE, but Air China have one-upped them and done incredibly badly.
What you’re about to see below comes from Air China’s in-flight magazine, and it’s no wonder this one has escalated into something of a race row.
Circulated on the airline’s flights since the beginning of the month, here’s what greeted those taking to the air:
Yes, this in 2016.
The BBC with the backlash:
Air China Media, which publishes the Wings of China magazine, said it wished to apologise to “readers and passengers who are feeling uncomfortable”.
It added: “This inappropriate description… was purely a work mistake by the editors and it’s not the magazine’s views.
“We will immediately recall this entire issue of magazines and draw lessons from this incident.”
Of course the apology and retraction isn’t enough to satisfy those angered by the blatant racism on display, and London MP Virendra Sharma has demanded an apology from the Chinese ambassador to the UK:
Mr Sharma said: “I am shocked and appalled that even today some people would see it as acceptable to write such blatantly untrue and racist statements”…
“I will await their response, and if an appropriate one is not forthcoming I shall feel forced to question whether Air China is a fit company to operate in the UK.”
I doubt a London MP has the clout to prevent Air China from operating in the UK, but 10 points for effort.
