Capetonians are pretty spoilt with our whale sightings, and unless they’re up to something dramatic, like a partial breach, we’ll barely pay attention.
One thing we would never bother to do is call the cops, because if they’re not rocking up for robberies and such, they ain’t rocking up for a few whales.
A widely-shared video filmed in Puget Sound, Washington, shows a woman calling 911 because she’s freaking out about the humpack whales swimming in and around the boat she is on.
The best bit here is the guy filming, who is absolutely captivated by the whole experience, trying to calm down the rest of the people on the boat.
Someone screams out that they don’t want to die, and another person can be heard crying, whilst Darren Lucianna tries to soothe some frazzled nerves amidst the panic.
We will use this video, because it comes with subtitles:
I am dying
This family called the cops on some whales
I can’t breathe

It seems like all ended well, because Darren captioned the video as follows:
Family boating trip turned out to be an amazing adventure. #greywhales #whales #pugetsound #familyfunday #family
He did get the species of whale wrong, but he’s still the sole voice of reason on that boat.
Also, there’s a 110% chance the woman who makes the call demands to speak to the manager at least once a month.
