If we had to describe 2020 in two words, ‘dumpster fire’ comes to mind.
It’s not just the pandemic getting everyone down, the world of politics is nothing short of a fiasco.
By way of example, the recent presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden involved a shoutout to the Proud Boys, and what amounts to a call to arms, from the current US president when asked his opinion on white supremacist groups.
When times are dark, comedy can provide some much-needed relief, and that’s what the satirical puppet show Spitting Image aims to provide.
According to The Guardian, the show originally ran between 1984 and 1996 and was watched by up to 15 million people.
The original series mocked British MPs and celebrities alike, including Margaret Thatcher. In the rebooted version, with Roger Law at the helm, and a new wave of writers, voice artists and puppeteers we’ll get the chance to laugh at the likes of Trump, Boris Johnson, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Mark Zuckerberg and so many more.
Comedian Matt Forde does an excellent job of voicing Trump and Johnson, as you’ll see in the trailer below.
“Boris and Trump may be ludicrous political actors, but they can still be lampooned. Trump’s puppet is grotesque. It looks like something that lives on the ocean floor. Doing his voice is the most fun I’ve ever had at work. He’s part Trump, part Cartman from South Park. If he needs to wrestle in a sketch, they’ll say: ‘Can you do Trump wrestling?’ and I have to make Trump wrestling noises into a microphone attached to my laptop while standing in my spare room in my underpants.”
No one is safe.
