Netflix has just introduced a new Top 10 website to show the most-watched movies and series, globally and by country.

The lists are put out each week and are based on the hours viewed per title.

The website is supposed to help the company, its creators, and members “understand what success means in a streaming world”.

Most of all, Netflix says they hope the new weekly Top 10 will help fans “discover new stories and join new conversations”.

The global top 10 lists are broken down into four categories – English films, English series, non-English films, and non-English series.

The country-based lists will just put all the languages together into two categories, films and series.

    MyBroadband has more:

To determine the rankings, Netflix measures hours viewed over the course of a week, starting on a Monday and ending on the following Sunday.

The lists for the preceding week are then published every Tuesday. Visitors to the site can see top 10 lists dating back to 28 June 2021.

Netflix explained that each season of a series is measured separately, so two or more from the same series might appear in the top 10.

Let’s take a look at how this has fared in South Africa so far.

From last week Monday to this past Sunday, the SA list has Red Notice (image above) on top as the most-watched film after just one week on the service:

In terms of series, Korean horror Squid Game has been the most-watched series for a good while:

The global rankings for films weren’t all that different, with Red Line at the top for the most-watched during the same period.

The global series list was quite different, though, with Narcos replacing Squid Game, which wasn’t even mentioned. Narcos is in the Top 10 for series in 83 countries on Netflix.

You can potter around here if you like.

Generally, though, South Africa seems to follow the global trends quite closely, except for Twilight

It is beyond me why that is still a thing here, 13 years after the first movie was released.
