In 2014, Senzo Meyiwa was at the peak of his powers.

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, who also captained Bafana Bafana on a number of occasions, was gunned down at girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus in October 2014.

Despite there being six eyewitnesses present, including some of his closest friends, his alleged killers were only caught in 2021 and will soon face trial.

It’s the sort of murder that has long been whispered about, with all sorts of rumours doing the rounds, making it ripe for a true-crime series.

Netflix has stepped up the plate and the five-part docuseries, Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star, will premiere on Netflix on April 7.

    Here’s Channel24:

The thrilling five-part true crime documentary series delves into the beloved soccer star’s murder, sharing insight into what transpired that fateful night when Meyiwa was gunned down in what was alleged to be a botched robbery.

The series features exclusive interviews with sports broadcaster Robert Marawa, former Hawks head Shadrack Sibiya, as well as Advocate Gerrie Nel and Meyiwa’s family members, who all provide an intimate look at both the life and death of the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain.

Unfortunately, we can gather from the teaser trailer that we’ll also have to hear from Fikile Mbalula with some characteristically empty words.

A little more from the official synopsis:

…it is only now, eight years later, that the suspects – alleged hitmen for hire – are going on trial. Were these five men involved,  or was it a cover-up for something more sinister?

With the backing and participation of Senzo’s family and access to investigators and key witnesses, Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star aims to unpack the truth behind this high-profile murder.

Multi-award-winning South African director and producer Sara Blecher is at the helm which only adds to the excitement.

    April 7. Mark it down.
