DJ Black Coffee has just won his first-ever Grammy and he couldn’t be any more gracious.
It is also the first time that a South African artist has won a Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, which the world-renowned DJ won for his seventh studio album, Subconsciously.
Black Coffee was at the Grammy Awards in a dapper white suit, walking onto the stage together with his son Esona to collect his award.
He did promise to be at the next awards with his other children, who were not present.
Although this is not Black Coffee’s first big award – he has won several SA Music Awards, five international DJ Awards, and a BET Award, reported TimesLIVE – he expressed much gratitude in his acceptance speech:
Congratulations to @RealBlackCoffee for winning the GRAMMY for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album 🔥🎧🌍 From Africa to the world!

Per Channel24, Black Coffee acknowledged “the African kids who are watching who come from where I come from who think they don’t have a chance” during a post-win interview.
He does indeed have a few young, aspiring DJs here in South Africa who are more than happy to emulate him, so it was cool that he gave them a dedicated shoutout:
Give the album a listen on Spotify or YouTube Music.
Congrats Black Coffee, you’ve smashed it.
