Last Monday, the FBI searched Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
The investigation is looking into the alleged mishandling of White House records, including potentially classified material, and those who aren’t too fond of the former US president have been revelling in his legal woes.
Meanwhile, his allies have called for the FBI to be defunded, accused agents of planting evidence, and claimed Trump can’t be guilty because he unilaterally declassified all of the documents he had retained.
No evidence of any sort has been provided to back up those last two claims and in June, one of Trump’s attorneys actually signed a statement declaring that all documents marked as “classified” at Mar-a-Lago had been returned.
It’s all a bit laughable and Trevor Noah has been getting in on the action. According to The Daily Beast, Noah says the “most fun” part of all this is watching how hard Trump and his allies are working to “invent new excuses for why this crime wasn’t a crime”:
First, they insisted that the FBI wouldn’t find anything incriminating, then they accused the agents of “planting” them. Now, Trump is saying that he was just taking his work home with him.
“It’s not ‘taking work home with you’ if you no longer have the job,” the host argued. “Like, if you get fired from your babysitting job but you still go pick up the kid from school… that’s just kidnapping.”
The excuse that most tickled the South African host relates to the argument that Trump had to move out of the White House so rapidly that he accidentally took a bunch of top secret files.
Or, as Noah put it, Trump wasn’t trying to steal the documents because he was too busy trying to steal the election.
