South African hopeful Stefan Benz surprised the American Idol judges with his golden ticket performance during a brilliant audition this week, but what had South Africans cheering was the response from judge Katy Perry as she exclaimed: “Jy gaan Hollywood toe!”
Benz, who moved to Los Angelos to pursue his music career, got off to a great start when he impressed the judges with a soulful rendition of the Brian McKnight song, One Last Cry. After surprising the judges, the 16-year-old Afrikaans singer from Centurion was asked how to say “You’re going to Hollywood” in Afrikaans by Luke Bryan. It was after this that pop superstar Katy Perry threw her hands in the air and exclaimed: “Jy gaan Hollywood toe!”
We hope Charlize Theron took note of the performance, and that there are now 41 people who speak this ‘dying language’. Benz has managed to rub shoulders with some of music’s biggest stars since he left his home country to pursue stardom in LA, and a glance at his Instagram account proves the blond teen from Gauteng is on his way to stardom.
