  • Balenciaga Has Mortally Wounded The Fashion Industry With Their R17,000 Towel Skirt

If video killed the radio star then Balenciaga just mortally wounded the fashion industry.

Well known for their ‘unique’ lifestyle accessories, Balenciaga’s new $925 (R17,300) Towel Skirt seems to skirt the line between fashion and taking the p*ss.

The Towel Skirt, which as the name implies is basically a towel around your waist, is made from terry cloth, which is also coincidentally the same material that towels are made of. As well as diapers.

The addition of a label and small buckle does however differentiate between this couture creation and a towel, but in all honesty, it’s a towel. As seen in your bathroom this morning.

Joan Rivers would have loved this.

The luxury fashion house was founded in 1919 by Spanish Cristobal Belnciaga, but dumping Alexander Wang as their creative director in 2015, the brand seems to have become almost too desperate for attention under Demna Gvasalia. More recently they have faced regular criticism and social media backlash over their campaigns. Here, we specifically think of the November 2022 campaign featuring children, teddy bears, and BDSM gear.

Unless the Just Stop Oil protestors begin glueing themselves to sweatshop floors, the rebranding of bathroom accessories will continue.

Behold, the last gasps of fashion.
