The third time is not always the charm, and what goes up, does not always come down. Not if you’re Dutch pro golfer Joost Luiten.
During the final round of the DP World Tour Championship, the Dutch golfer found himself in a bizarre off-fairway incident when he flung his driver into a tree on the ninth hole after a particularly frustrating shot.
Adding insult to frustration, the golf club never came down, and Luiten was forced to throw another club at the stuck driver to dislodge it.
In a scene straight out of Curb Your Enthusiasm, that one got stuck as well. So too the third club the golfer sent flying into the tree in an attempt to get the first two down.
Fortunately, the tournament’s social media staff were on hand to videotape the weird scene as Luiten, his caddy, and others tried to bring the clubs down. At one point, a man wearing a blue shirt climbed into the tree and began shaking it to liberate the driver, but the club-stealing tree was having none of it.
A frustrated Luiten even chucked a stick at the clubs, but the tree was having none of that either and held on to the stick as well. This prompted a justified kick to his golf bag, which by now only had 11 clubs left.
“I tried to get it out by throwing some other clubs at it and [two] other clubs got stuck up the tree so I couldn’t get them out,” Luiten said.
The 37-year-old golfer was eventually forced to admit defeat to the tree and had to move on with a smaller arsenal of clubs until a tournament volunteer managed to get the clubs unstuck and back to the golfer – just in time to use them on the back nine.
“Lost it and threw my driver, and it got stuck up a tree,” Luiten said. “That sums up my week nicely.
