Apparently October 29 is National Cat Day in the United States. Not being Americans, it’s understandable that no one here knows, or indeed cares. But still, National Cat Day is worth remarking on because yesterday, Uber hand delivered kittens for people to play with if they lived in New York, San Francisco, or Seattle.
Just take a guess where scientists have found a whole array of new animal species. You’d be thinking somewhere isolated, somewhere big, somewhere uncharted… Yup, it’s Australia. The continent down under is home to some of the world’s most fascinating animals, and just a few days ago a few more were were added to the list.
Guys, have you ever heard of Walker Bay? It is an absolutely stunning stretch of Coast between Hermanus and Gansbaai (Stanford’s sort of in the middle of it) in the Cape. Local photographer, Hugh-Daniel Grobler got in touch with us to share his shots. They will absolutely blow your mind.
For some reason, we think it’s a good idea to give our pets ‘edible treats’ that they wouldn’t naturally find in the wild. That’s not to say that we should treat our pets like wild animals, but, you know, don’t give your dog a milkshake. In a new pet-treat controversy that has sparked outrage across the States, hundreds of pets have been dying after eating a ‘beef jerky treat’ that was made in china.
The more time we spend on the internet, the more we realise that the whole point of the internet is to display cats and dogs at their funniest. No, seriously now, we all spend a large portion of our internet time on pets – admit it. With that being said, we found a gallery of high-speed photographs of dogs shaking water off their faces.
When it comes to air pollution, China is pretty much the worst. Chinese citizens are used to grey skies in summer, acid rain in winter and choking smog all year round, but nothing quite like this has ever happened. Harbin, the rough-and-tough capital city of Heilongjiang province is home to some 11 million people – all of whom tried to evacuate at the same time, when pollution reached critical levels just yesterday.
Not content to let the hartebeest rest easy at the top of the pile of South African antelope attempting to murder athletes, a small group of Wildebeest ran headlong towards Impi Elite race contender, James Duncan on Saturday morning at the Lievland Estate in Stellenbosch, narrowly missing their target.
This one’s a gem. Officials at a prison in Moldova became a bit suspicious when they noticed a grey and white cat repeatedly entering and exiting the prison fence. You can imagine a pair of bulky slavic officials staring at the video footage over a few weeks, while it slowly dawns on them that this isn’t normal.
The Maldives – well known for it’s crystal blue waters, brilliant white sands and those boats with the glass bottoms that let you see the coral reefs. This is the last place on earth you’d associate with the word “rubbish dump”. But there’s something sordid just a stone’s throw away from the swankiest hotels on earth. There’s something smelly on the horizon. It is ‘Rubbish Island’, and it stinks to high hell.
Being South Africans, we’ve become quite accustomed to those coffee table books with pictures of the big five sprawled on the cover. Heck, most of us have seen at least some of the big five in person – no biggie. But never have we got a glimpse into the nocturnal lives of these magnificent animals.
Cats have been ousted as the most popular animal on social media for the minute, and have been replaced by a 6-month old pig named ‘Jamon’ from São Paulo, Brazil. The pigs owner is a bit of a funny one, often dressing his pig up as a turtle. (What?)
What the hell is an Oarfish? While the term may escape laymen, the Oarfish has been well documented by marine biologists for years. It’s not anything too strange, it’s just strange-lookin’. Although, due to their mysterious beachings after storms, and thier tendency to linger on the surface of the sea when they are dying – they are a common source of sea-serpent tales. And boy, do we have a sea-serpent tale today.
Reports are coming in via Twitter that a swimmer has been attacked and killed by two sharks off Point at Jeffreys Bay. The account of the Sharks Spotters safety programme tweeted the following:

Veteran BBC cameraman, Doug Allen confirmed in a recent convocation speech at a UK university that scenes in BBC wildlife documentaries are regularly filmed in artificial sets to guarantee the quality of the shots.
The Japanese town of Taiji became synonymous with brutal dolphin slaying after the Oscar-winning, tear-jerking, doccie, ‘The Cove,’ was released. Sadly, regardless of the international recognition and fame the documentary received, dolphin hunting at the cove still takes place annually between September and April, and its about to get a whole lot darker.
A group of tourists cruising off the coast of California this last weekend happened upon something of a rarity in the ocean – a whale carcass. Sighting a whale carcass is unusual because a plethora of marine animals usually make short work of the bodies of deceased sea-dwellers. That principal was excellently demonstrated by multiple great white sharks, who went to task on the body of the whale right in front of the boat.
Nobody can deny that puppies are cute, but this little gal is something else. Weighing in at about the same as your average banana, little ‘Angel’ the Yorkshire terrier will melt your heart.

While in the White House, Barney was the subject of annual “Barney Cam” videos and even had his own website, Barney.gov. He was a gift to Laura Bush from Christine Todd Whitman, the then governor of New Jersey, […]
We’d like to introduce you to Southeast Asia’s giant freshwater stingray. This badboy can grow to more than 16 feet long and 600 kilograms. And while it packs a 15-inch, poisonous, serrated stinger, it’s actually a gentle, inquisitive creature which was first described by scientists in 1990, and is already on the verge of extinction.
Check out these unbelievable photos taken by a camera trap in the Russian Far East. The camera was set up to photograph Siberian tigers for a study, and instead captured a Golden Eagle taking down a 88-100 pound deer.
Happy Friday, friends. Take consolation that you don’t live in the wilds of South America when you climb in to your car this afternoon. Take it away, NatGeo…
Sharks are commonly represented by pop culture as predators that will almost certainly circle their prey before closing in for the kill. But the truth of the matter is that you wouldn’t see them coming if they were certain you were a food item – they probably aren’t all that convinced if they’re circling. This, […]
The No Danger Diaries crew did it again this morning, and found snow on Table Mountain. Apparently they even found some half way up! Well done, guys – you’ve won a bottle of Pierre Jourdan Brut! Click through for gallery..
With the incredibly high price tag of rhino horn in the east, many aspire to one day get their hands on one, so they can be like this guy, Mr L. Not just for supposed health benefits, but also status.

Charly, the world’s smallest (hence, cutest) pony has been kidnapped from a horse fair in Italy. The police, who aren’t horsing around on the issue, are suspecting the mafia will hold the pony for ransom.
If you’re voted the ugliest animal in the world, do you see it as a victory? We sure hope that’s the way the ‘blobfish’ is taking the news that he is the winner.
