Against a backdrop of a 51 man Springbok squad named by the Bok selectors this week, Morrey assesses options at loose forwar,d with a trophy to defend in September.
Never one to shy away from saying things that might just come back to bite him, our national rugby coach and orator, Peter de Villiers, has pretty much called Sonny Bill Williams overrated. He’s also said that we’ll have him worked out come the World Cup.
I’ve been talking to rugby people for the past seven weeks and the amount of anti-Peter De Villiers talk is very concerning. What do you want from the man? In the build up to the world cup I think we should put a ban on all “Snor” bashing.
Saru has announced that Port Elizabeth will host the South African leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series for the next four years, starting from the 2011/2012 season. The city of George has hosted the event for the last nine seasons. Good for you, Eastern Cape.
After an emotional and hard-fought battle on the highveld, University of Cape Town (UCT) became rugby’s 2011 Varsity Cup winners last night against University of Pretoria (Tuks). UCT’s Ikey Tigers displayed impressive courage, mental strength and dare we say it, tiger blood, to beat Tuks 26-16 and emerge as champions for the first time since the tournament’s inception.
There has been much speculation over the photograph of Stormers coach / ex-Springbok, Robbie Fleck, which graced the pages of the Cape Times and subsequently went ‘viral’ on the net just over a week ago. 2oceansvibe caught up with Fleck on Thursday to find out what was really going on in that photograph. There is a critical question we must answer ahead of September. Who should start at 10 for the Boks in this world cup year? How do we ensure that we select a fly half who can win us the tournament, and run the game?
Watching the Brits handle themselves on and around the sports field is a hobby that many of us have indulged in over the years. In particular their addiction to jinxing. However sick you may think it is, the way they (and the press) build themselves up, and then proceed to collapse in a heap of […]
I told you last week that the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) had said no to hosting the Super 15 game between the Sharks and Crusaders at Twickenham in the wake of 6,5 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch. But now it seems that the RFU may have had a change of heart.
If you, like me, weren’t able to get to a television for whatever reason this weekend, you may have tuned in and listened to the blokes on the couch on 2oceansvibe Radio and their alternative commentary. You may also have heard them speaking in awe about the cult-like properties of the “Bearded One”. Here is his story.

Beer. Nectar of the Gods. Liquid Grace was crafted for humankind to take the edge off any week. We all know that, but just how strong do ‘they’ make it? Well it turns out that the World’s Strongest Beer went on sale yesterday and the name will bring a wry smile to one member of the Sharks squad.

[…]
Do you remember the 2010 Currie Cup semi-final between the Bulls and the Sharks? If you didn’t watch it, you may remember it as the game that was interrupted by bees. In the fifteen minutes that we waited for the bees to be cleared, we were subjected to a deluge of puns, which grew significantly […]

Two of the players participating in the Neo Africa Tri-Series, Anton van Zyl and Doppies Le Grange, will be popping in to the 2oceansvibe Radio studios this afternoon to shoot the breeze. There is a strong possibility that we’ll get on to the subject of rugby, what with Anton’s recent titanic performance for the Barbarians […]
If you’re a rugby fan in Cape Town, and you haven’t heard of the Neo Africa Tri-Series, then you’ve been missing a trick. This year’s Tri-Series is the second of the annual event, designed to test the mettle of three local Super Rugby teams prior to the kick off of the Super 15. This year, […]

Brendan Venter would never have imagined how quickly his ‘protest’ would catch on. After giving one of the most memorable sports interviews in recent times, the source of his inspiration has been established. Mike Bassett: England Manager was a movie that he had watched on the team bus travelling to Gloucester. And we have the script for you after the jump.
Air New Zealand has cut a scene from its in-flight safety video, which showed All Black centre Richard Kahui reject a kiss from a male flight attendant. Their reason: such a scene has the potential to cause gay suicides and substance abuse. Outrageous slippery slope. [VIDEO].
This is teetering on a hellish crossroads of genius, insanity, chemically-altered states of being, and too many concussions in the space of one life time. Brendan, what are you doing? What’s your secret? How? Why? As you’ll see from this video, these are all very good questions. Very good, very good, good questions.
With the year rapidly drawing to a close there are various sporting awards handed out. The Italian Football side did it for D&G. Helen Mirren et al did it for a local hospital in the movie Calendar Girls. Now, UCT’s MC Marais XV have stripped off for charity and an annual tour. Ladies and Gentlemen (although this one is definitely more for the laydeez), I present the 2011 MC Marais Naked Calendar:
I must say that for all the cynicism surrounding recent Springbok performances, one overwhelming positive is that pundits are speaking their minds. However, after all the whingeing it’s time for some serious reflection and Jake White’s recent blog will take you through the key battles ahead of the biggest test match of the year at Twickers.
Springbok coach Peter de Villiers generously made special provision for an interview with 2oceansvibe Radio’s Seth Rotherham and Bruce Good ahead of the test between South Africa and Sotland at Murrayfield on November the 20th. You can listen to all of the high-pitched enthusiasm here, right now.
There’s literally no excuse for getting drunk and taking pictures of your team-mate’s Labrador performing a sex act on you, as Canberra Raiders winger, Joel Monaghan did. I’ve tried and I can’t think of a single scenario where that would be an appropriate course of action.
Kevin Mealamu is a talented individual. Not only is the master of getting away with blatant head butts (yawn), but also he is pretty masterful at driving a tank. Competing with fellow ABs Conrad Smith and Piri Weepu, Mealamu shows that even if he was out of rugby for months, he could combine his head butting and tank-driving skills to become quite the serviceman.
