A report published by the Mail & Guardian indicates that an average of one policeman per day is arrested for crime in South Africa. The arrests, made between September 2010 and April this year, have apparently spurred police management to start cleaning up “the system.”

Police commissioner Bheki Cele is currently suspended. It is also recommended that he be fired and that a criminal investigation be launched into his involvement regarding the irregular awarding of police headquarter leases worth R1,7bn. But Cele has now allegedly written to President Jacob Zuma, asking to be reinstated. As easy as that.
The board of inquiry has turned in it’s 113 page report whether or not Cele is fit to hold office. The report was handed to the Office of the Presidency on Sunday, but has now been leaked to the media.
So there was a NATO summit ongoing in Chicago over the weekend – which naturally attracts a couple of protest groups, members from the “Occupy” movement among them. It also attracted police and Homeland Security, who proceeded to handcuff protesters, detain them at gunpoint, and ram into a crowd of them with a van.
South African police are not the public’s favourite people despite much of the great work that they do. Recently, stories of police brutality, corruption in the police force have emerged – do I even need to mention Bheki Cele? So when someone finds themselves behind bars for 18 months – for all the wrong reasons, it’s nice to see that something is done about it.
This morning the Treasury issued a report in which it recommended that the SAPS reduce staff by 9 000. In a country with one of the highest crime rates in the world, the recommendation seems questionable at best.

Three officers have been kicked out of the police’s firearms unit in the UK. This after a controversial photo was found on a computer during a raid on another officer’s home. It depicts one of the guys pointing his shotgun at another, who poses on the bonnet of an armoured Land Rover Defender with his finger on his mouth like a pin-up girl.
Hoof. The legal battle waged by the the Occupy London camp to keep their place at St Paul’s Cathedral was lost last night – and within about five minutes of the injunction being ordered, the camp was evacuated by bailiffs and officers from the City of London Police.
It’s been about four years since the police raids in Stellenbosch that had the whole Cape Town talking – you remember, right? Shotguns, riot police, pepper spray, the whole hog. How’s this? I was late to school every now and then, but I was never met with police. This seems a little hardcore: 27 pupils who arrived late for school were greeted by a group of police officers waiting for them. This comes after 700 students and some teachers arrived late to the same school on Monday.
You can imagine the New Mexico police chief was shocked when a security video of the officer and the woman surfaced. The irony here is that the officer, known only as ‘Lopez’, was recently given the title of 2009’s police officer of the year. He was also awarded a ‘challenge’ coin for going over and above the call of duty. That’s what she said.
