We swim in the oceans and invade sharks’ hunting grounds, and then we complain when we lose a leg (which, yes, is rather inconvenient). But, ladies, we have less chance of losing a leg. Yay for us!
Good. Another reason for us to not take up surfing. As if the threat of sharks isn’t enough, we can now worry about fish that are big enough to eat said sharks.
As most Capetonians and Durbanites will know, there is nothing quite like the freedom of catching a wave and riding it all the way to the shore. It is a moment made sweeter only by sharing it with good mates… like your dog perhaps, or your pig.
Sometimes, faith in humanity can be restored through some generous and kind gestures from one person to another, and everyone banding together to let a wheelchair-bound concert-goer the chance to crowd-surf is right up there.

Here’s something to keep all the surfers and beach goers out of the scorching heat this weekend. The guys from RVCA Rolling Retro 2014 are dusting off the old surfboards that your gram-pa used when he still had a washboard stomach. So put on some retro gear and catch a wave with them this Sunday.
Next to Mario, Andrew Cotton from the UK might be the plumber with the biggest balls. Cotton rode an 80 ft monster of a wave off the coast of Nazare, Portugal. His ride has been submitted for this year’s Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards.

Calling beach bums everywhere: it’s time to get excited about the Wavescape Film Festival. If you love the ocean, the great outdoors, and surfing, it’s the place for you. In 2012 over 3,000 people attended, and the festival raised R240 000 for ocean preservation. This year, it’s set to be even bigger and better.
When it comes to breaking records, some choose the safer route: opting to put straws in their mouths. Some, on the other hand, enjoy being towed into 30-metre waves by a jetski. This was the gambit of one Carlos Burle, in an attempt to break the world record for biggest wave ever surfed, held by Garret McNamara, who successfully carved a 23-metre behemoth just two years ago.

Two Cape Town surfers Benji and Davey Brand, as well as local film maker Dan Mace have produced a video highlighting what may well be one of the last great undiscovered surf spots on an African coastline.
