When all this Brexit nonsense started (100 years ago? I can’t remember a time Britain wasn’t trying to awkwardly exit the European Union), I couldn’t help feeling like Britain, having lost most of its ‘Empire’, had decided to colonise itself.
Turns out I wasn’t far off, and we’ll get to that in a minute. First, here’s an update on what went down on Friday, January 31.
After 47 years, the UK is no longer part of the EU. It’s been four years since Theresa May oversaw a referendum that set events in motion.
Sky News reports that Boris Johnson referenced the combination of “celebration and regret” that would be felt across Britain, on “this landmark day”:
An upper-class twit of the highest order.
Moving on to how the people responded. Some were understandably upset. Others saw this as an opportunity to really be themselves.
For example:
Yep, one ‘referendudum‘. That ‘dudummy’ up there is what one might call a classic Brexit supporter.
So, it shouldn’t be surprising that other ‘dudummies’ out there decided that leaving the EU meant that they could finally let their freak flags fly, under the guise of claiming back their ‘Englishness’.
In Norwich, someone went around taping up posters on all 15 floors of an apartment block called Winchester Tower. Sky News, again:
A “Happy Brexit Day” poster telling residents of a block of flats “we do not tolerate” people speaking other languages has been reported to the police.
A photo of the poster, which was shared on social media, shows that it reads: “As we finally have our great country back we feel there is one that needs to be made clear to Winchester Tower residents.”
“We do not tolerate people speaking other languages than English in the flats.”
“We are now our own country again and the Queens (sic) English is the spoken tongue here.”
Classy. Please also note that it’s not just ‘English’, but the ‘Queen’s English’, something which the average Brit would have a tough time getting right.
The sign goes on to tell people to ‘evolve or leave’.
It looks like the racists needed only the tiniest bit of encouragement before they were at the photocopier, declaring their position.
Let’s check in on the rest of the country to see how they’re making out:
