There was a time, maybe a decade back, when vegans had it pretty rough when dining out.

A restaurant menu might have a vegetarian option or two, neither of which was made with much love, and nothing for the vegans.

It’s tough to say exactly when being vegan went from hearing recycled jokes about eating leaves to a growing movement, but the shift has well and truly taken place. Perhaps The Game Changers, now widely available on Netflix, had something to do with it.

Even major restaurant chains like Spur and Burger King have stepped up to the plate and the same can be said for South Africa’s favourite fruit juice aficionados.

Sir Fruit recently announced the launch of a vegan smoothie and it’s packed with all the right stuff. Oat milk, pear, banana, peanut butter, and cacao – yes, I’ll have some of that.

The vegan smoothie slots in beautifully with the existing range so that’s there’s something for everyone.

I’m a sucker for that mango smoothie (mango, passion fruit, carrot, orange, and yoghurt) or purple smoothie (raspberry, beetroot, strawberry, yoghurt, and chia seeds), and the tropical smoothie (yoghurt, pear, banana, pineapple and oat milk) has a real summer feel to it.

We have to cling to the last vestiges of summer for as long as we can so I’m all for it. There is no judgement from my side.

There’s also much to be said for getting in an immunity-boosting shot each morning alongside your coffee. The shot blends cold-pressed orange, ginger, turmeric, lemon, and apple juices to create a potent tonic, as well as some added Echinacea for an extra kick.

You have treated your body well. May any winter sniffles be kept at bay.

Oh, and take the time to watch The Game Changers when you can.
