Facebook is set to float on the stock exchange today and all its early investors must be smiling. One of them, U2’s frontman Bono, has shares worth over $1,5 billion alone. This puts him well above Paul McCartney – currently the world’s richest musician. Who knew devoting your career to charity, world peace, and good causes could be so profitable?
I was reclining on the deck of the Safehouse the other day, enjoying one of these secret Winter/Summer days that Capetonians tend to keep to themselves when describing our home, for fear of coming across as braggards, taking in the sunset. The ol’ iPod threw out McCully Workshop’s The Buccaneer, which I’ve been known to […]
Redfoo: “I’m sexy and I know it.” There, it’s done. Whether you’re a fan of the song or not, LMFAO’s chart-topping hit is now on infinite repeat in your head. It’s one of those typical, infectious beats that seems to worm its way into your mind, even after just reading the title. Well, YouTube sensation “Noah” is about to change that, for the better. Click through for his awesome cover.
When Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor, was asked if he’d want a hologram Freddie Mercury a la Tupac – he declined, saying “I don’t want to appear with a hologram of my dear friend.” Which is unfortunately ambiguous wording, because they’ve decided to conjure up a Mercury hologram at tonight’s 10th anniversary We Will Rock You musical.
Yesterday, 2oceansvibe reported that a local man, Guy Hobbs, had accused Elton John of plagiarising and misappropriating lyrics that he had written for John’s hit single, “Nikita”. This morning, he contacted us for full comment. Read his compelling argument, after the jump.
You know that Elton John song, “Nikita”? According to Capetonian, Guy Hobbs, he actually wrote the lyrics in the early 80s following a relationship with a Russian waitress called Natasha. But when he submitted it to several publishing companies, he got turned down. In 1985, the song suddenly popped up on the radio as a new Elton John single.
Following the death of Beastie Boys band member, Adam “MC” Yauch, one of the co-creators of Chapelle’s Show has released previously unseen footage of the band performing “The New Style,” a song from their debut album, on the show in 2004. The show’s co-creator and host Dave Chappelle performs with them for a bit.
Fed up with the damage that piracy is doing to the local music industry, Lords Fire Recordz have planned a march against digital piracy, scheduled to happen in Pretoria today. The group would like to see harsher penalties for those guilty of piracy, and is calling on government to do more to combat the trading of illegal music in South Africa.
If you missed this on Ian F’s Breakfast Show on 2oceansvibe Radio this morning, this cover was performed at the Hollywood Bowl on May 4, 2o12, just days before the passing of Adam Yauch (AKA MCA), a co-founder of the Beastie Boys.
You guys have heard of Kickstarter – that site that lets people pitch their projects for funding to the internet at large, and which has led to new apps, art projects, and a Robocop statue in Detroit. All of which stopped mattering when Amanda Palmer raised $500 000 in four days on the platform – with 24 days of funding remaining.
It’s here people. The D is back. We broke the news last month that Tenacious D was training with Josh Groban and Dave Grohl, and the fruits of their labour has arrived. Here is the first video from the band, as well as details for the ENTIRE album on Soundcloud.
See, this is what happens when you’re a rock star who fails to die young: you end up doing something in aviation, or in Wales. Or, if you’re Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, I guess you do both, and depress everybody who remembers when you were still cool.

If you don’t know who Men at Work are, I suggest you go and sit in the corner and slap yourself around a bit. They were around in the 80’s and produced some great hits like “Who can it be now?”, “Overkill” and the legendary “Down Under”. One of their members, Greg Ham, has just been found dead in Melbourne.
In an interview over the weekend, Damon Albarn has said it is “unlikely” that there will be any more new material from Gorillaz. He has not given a specific reason, but implied that disagreements between him and his Gorillaz collaborator, artist Jamie Hewlett, could be at the core.
Take it with a pinch of salt, but over the weekend this pretty convincing Lollapalooza internal memo hit the internet. I mean blurry photographs of lineup lists aren’t set in stone, but it looks pretty legit – and includes headline acts by The Black Keys, Black Sabbath, and The Shins. Check out the full thing after the jump.
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has spent the last three years slaving away at a massively insane internet-only, 44-song concept record, called Teargarden By Kaleidyscope. That album now includes an “album within an album” called Oceania, which will be released via traditional record-label channels, with EMI on June 19. Check out the epic title track below.
This morning we told you about Deadmau5 taking on Madonna via Twitter. He mistook her asking the crowd at a recent concert if “they’ve seen Molly?” for disguised drug use promotion. It turns out she was actually referring to one of her new singles, “Have you seen Molly”, and took to Twitter to correct the electro artist. She even used a pic! Awkward.
Iconic amplifier company Marshall has expanded into selling people drums and headphones over the past couple of years – and now they’ve announced a mini-fridge that looks like an amp on the outside, but has an inside made to hold dozens of cold beverages. Shut up and take my money.
Toronto’s Deadmau5 has been blasting Madonna on his Facebook page for asking folks at the Miami Ultra Music Festival if they’ve seen “molly,” which is young-person speak for MDMA. Deadmau5 moved from slating Madonna’s embarrassing use of drug slang to a spiel about equating electro with drug use – with a couple of tasteful expletives thrown in.
Ard Matthews outdid himself with the music video for his latest hit, Bolder. You would have heard the track on 2ov.fm and Radio 5, but this is the first time you will see the video. Shot entirely on his iPhone 4S (courtesy of Digicape) in India, Ard not only performed in the video, but he […]
